Black Lives Matter

The reason I called this site the Phoenix Data Project and not something related to COVID or coronavirus is that I have a bigger vision for quality data’s impact on the problems in our life. This page is my first foray in directions other than the pandemic. For the moment these are just links to insightful alternative reporting on Black Lives Matter.

Radiolab Podcast- Flag and Fury: An in depth story about what it took to get the Confederate Flag off of Mississippi’s state flag. It’s way more than you think and involves so many people with such different perspectives. This story is very thought provoking.

NPR- How non-policing programs can be successful: This is an absolutely a brilliant segment about the intersection of public health and policing. It shows how public health approach and public health principles can be used to treat black on black crime crime more effectively than policing.

99% Invisible- Freedom house ambulance service: This is a story about how the first EMS Paramedic Ambulance services in the US were developed in a poor black neighborhood in Pittsburgh. It is a really surprising untold story.

NPR- Hidden Brain Podcast- A founding contradiction Thomas Jefferson's stance on slavery: Thomas Jefferson is a complicated historical figure. This podcast has an in depth look at his contradictions that also allows one to reflect on our own current contradictions. I like this episode for its thoughtfulness. It gave me a lot of good education.
